Since 2011, Romania celebrates every year the National Culture Day on January 15th, the date of birth of the national poet, Mihai Eminescu. 171 years after his birth; 2021 marks several anniversaries of major personalities of the Romanian culture, such as 200 years since the birth of the poet Vasile Alecsandri, 150 years since the birth of the historian Nicolae Iorga, 140 years since the birth of the composer George Enescu or 125 years since the birth of the poet and essayist Tristan Tzara.
Many cultural institutions have announced dedicated online programs for January 15, the National Culture Day, a celebration introduced in 2010. It is marked on the birth date of poet Mihai Eminescu. Culture, in every form, transcends borders and linguistic barriers, unites and brings people closer. In the current particular context, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs celebrates the National Culture Day by offering to the public, through Romania’s diplomatic missions and consular offices abroad, an extraordinary concert of one of the most praised Romanian symphonic orchestras, the Romanian Youth Orchestra.
The concert is conducted by Cristian Mandeal and the program includes works by celebrated Romanian composers, such as Three Pieces for String Orchestra by Constantin Silvestri, Romanian Serenade and Peasants Dance for cello and orchestra by Constantin Dimitrescu (soloist Ștefan Cazacu), the Ballad for Violin and Orchestra by Ciprian Porumbescu (soloist Alexandru Tomescu), Romanian Folk Dances by Sabin Păutza, alongside the Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 36 by Ludwig van Beethoven.
