Minister of Foreign Affairs, Teodor Meleșcanu had a phone conversation with the Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Péter Szijjártó, today, on June 6, 2019.
During the conversation, the two ministers approached the situation at the International Military Cemetery in the Valea Uzului. The Minister of Foreign Affairs addressed his Hungarian counterpart the request to send a very clear message to the Hungarian community to avoid confrontations and escalation of tensions. Minister Teodor Meleșcanu highlighted the importance of identifying practical solutions to be accepted by the entire local community, Romanians and Hungarians alike and stressed the unbounded right of each state to commemorate the heroes buried in this cemetery.
At the same time, Minister Teodor Meleșcanu assured that the necessary measures are taken to avoid the unwanted escalation of the situation, without the need for non-constructive external interventions in this respect.
